New sales data from Circana reveals the PS5 has maintained its lead over PS4 console purchases in the USA, with fresh launch-aligned figures confirming the current-gen box has still sold seven per cent more systems than PS4 managed at the same point in its lifespan. Data covers 52 months of USA sales, and PS5 continues to outpace PS4 in the region.
This is the exact same figure that was reported during January 2025's update from Circana, so Sony has maintained the lead it has over PS4 for another month. PS5 was the best-selling console in the USA in terms of both units and dollar sales for February 2025. Comparatively, Xbox Series X|S sales trail the launch-aligned sales of the Xbox One in the USA by 19 per cent.
More good news for Sony comes from its PS Portal device, which was once again the best-selling accessory last month in terms of spending. With the new Midnight Black range introduced recently, the black version of the PS Portal was the third best-selling accessory and the black PS5 DualSense Edge controller was the fifth.
Given the price difference between the PS5 and how much the PS4 cost at this same point in its lifecycle, plus the supply constraints it experienced at the start of the generation, it's impressive to see the current-gen console maintain a healthy lead.

This is pretty remarkable considering PS5 had stock shortages, global financial crisis, higher price etc. Well done Sony, it's a great product.
I’m responsible for three of those bad boys! A launch disc based PS5 for yours truly, a digital PS5 for my son, and now a shiny PS5 Pro. I’m old and don’t have time for multiple consoles so I’ll keep feeding the Sony machine as long as they keep making them. 😎
Headline makes sense once you read the article. I was thinking “who on earth is still buying a PS4?”
@themightyant I think the most significant factor is that by this time ps4 had received significant price cuts that made it more enticing to casual gamers.
At this rate it should easily pass ps4's lifetime sales considering xbox is no longer a competition for playstation
But I thought Consoles are dying...... 🥴
And ps4 still had better games than the ps5.but both is a amazing consoles. Word up son
This is mainly due to a shift from Xbox to PlayStation, because PS4 + Xbox One is still ahead of PS5 + Xbox Series X/S, according to this statistics:
https://www.vgchartz.com/article/464072/ps5-and-xbox-series-xs-vs-ps4-and-xbox-one-sales-comparison-january-2025/
Just wait for GTA VI, thats going to pump those numbers. It will benefit all consoles, but I imagine Sony will take the lions share.
@AltimusPrime It's the same for me. Bought 2 at launch. A disc version for my son. Digital for myself. Then got a Pro a few months ago. Absolutely love this console!
@UltimateOtaku91 it's really just former Xbox players buying it. Ever since the PS4/XB1 generation that's basically what has happened, Sony slowing gaining what they lost to the 360 from the PS2 userbase. Not actually expanding beyond that.
I guarantee the majority of these people had at least 1 PlayStation before, probably a PS1 or PS2. The console space hasn't actually really grown for PlayStation. PS5 has to sell 160 million to say that.
@naruball Agreed, that was included in "higher price", but I could have spelled it out more.
@Max_the_German Don't forget Nintendo! Wii U vs Switch is crazy.
@themightyant oh, I see. Thanks!
Sony’s done an incredible job this gen!
And the digital age looms ever nearer
69 percent of Xbox Series X|S sales were digital SKUs. 50 percent of PS5 sales were digital SKUs.
Wonder what the percentage was in the first two years of both consoles.
The only territory this gen thats been down is Europe
@RagnarLothbrok
Think the PS5 is down about 5 million in Europe against PS4 same time line and it grows each month very slowly.
It’s cost of living, high console price and a lack of big Sony AAA campaign games just for the PS5.
Whilst FIFA and COD release still on PS4 each year they won’t make up that 5 million gap in Europe.
I love my PS5.
And my PS5 Pro.
@hypnotoad the Pro came at the perfect time for me! My wife wanted a new couch and dining room table. I agreed, as long as I can get a PS5 Pro. She agreed. Them, I needed a new TV because the older set had outdated specs. 85" ended up in my son's room and the new 100" is where I play the Pro. We both had to make compromises lol.
@AhmadSumadi You can never have too many inches.
"The black PS5 DualSense Edge controller was the fifth".
Good news for Sony, bad news for all users who suffer from drifting.
I recently bought a Nacon Revolution Pro because I was fed up with all the dualsenses ending up the same.
Good stuff. I wonder how PS5 is doing in my native land of Englandshire
@TheKurgan That's exactly what my wife said LMAO!
It's an amazing machine. Yes the exclusives are further apart but game dev times have bloated for everyone not just Sony. Dual sense is an amazing controller. The console is snappy and easy to use. The 1st party exclusives are just the icing at this point. Enjoy it while it lasts. That Switch 2 bout to gave crazy launch numbers
@naruball this would be an excellent time to have a price cut with Switch 2 looming imo. With rumors it's somewhere between 400-500 at launch is Sony had a SKU cheaper than switch 2 and advertised it as such it could be helpful I think
@get2sammyb better than the ps4, ps3, and ps2 gen?
@get2sammyb Is it? For themselves, maybe. For the consumer, this has probably been the most damaging generation in gaming history.
Diminishing technological returns in exhange for enormous sums of money (PS5 Pro, PSVR2). Metrics like the one used for the Portal (let’s congratulate ourselves on the revenue - not the sales - from a £300 peripheral). The Live Service clusterf. Number of worthwhile PS5 exclusives are countable on one hand. Sony are having a good generation in spite of themselves, not because they’re doing a great job, imo.
That’s pretty impressive, especially without a price decrease (and it even increased in some locations)! 52 months in the PS4 had global sales of 60 million. I know this only covers the US, but if the 7% increase were consistent in every region that’d put the PS5 around 64.2 million. If you take the 2:1 ratio for Xbox sales last gen, it would put them around 24.3 million Series X/S. Total it up and you have 88.5 million PS5/Xbox consoles this gen as opposed to 90 million last around this point.
Great job.
PS5 is become my number 1 video game machine, dethroned Nintendo Switch to number 4 position.
@vyseofhr this is the worst playstation generation for sure.
@Nyne11Tyme indeed, that would be a great idea, but I'm not sure if they'll go for it. They seem obsessed with making every single thing profitable. They used to be willing to take some losses in order to increase their install base. With the new people in charge, I just don't see it happening. Maybe a sale here and there but not a permanent price cut.
Nah bro. Consoles are dead. Xbox gamepass is the future. I know the facts don't align with that worldview but we're in a post fact world.
/s
About gamepass being the future. We are actually in a post fact world.
@nomither6 that’s harsh considering we’re only halfway through it. Second half is when ***** gets gud. PS3 had a wasaaay worse start than this lol. In fact PS5 has nearly outsold PS3 already
@nomither6 Yeah. That's why I didn't buy a PS5 until this year. Didn't have a reason to. Until Astro Bot and then Split Fiction. Also with Doom on the horizon. A PS5 is really just starting to become worth owning. FF7 Rebirth is the only game I missed out on that I wanted. Everything else I could play on my PS4.
Re-elect governor Marley! When there’s only one candidate, there’s only one choice.
I mean people are gearing up for almighty GTA6 and there's been surprise hits like KCD2, the great MHWilds and more incoming.
All that about to end when that Switch 2 drops
@PlayStation_Dawg1994 not really. for every nintendo owned there’s either a ps or xbox to go with it. nobodies getting by with just a nintendo, that’s actually torture 😂💀
Love my PS5 even if it is starting to show its age.
@vyseofhr It’s just a very reductive way of looking at things. You’re entitled to your opinion but I don’t agree.
@nomither6 I personally think Sony’s done a decent job most generations, even the PS3.
The industry has changed a lot since PS1/PS2 so hard to compare directly.
@PlayStation_Dawg1994 Is Switch 2 will have GTA 6, Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Lost Soul Aside, Doom: The Dark Ages, Ninja Gaiden 4, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, or MGS Delta at launch?
@vyseofhr In terms of always having a backlog of interesting games to play yes it has been the best generation with constant high quality releases coming out. Since 2022 there is no month where an excellent game doesn't release. The only people who will be upset are those that own every console and prefer playing on other platforms.
@Nei Excellent Monkey Island reference!
USA, home of the Xbox - and even the mom's basement dwellers have the intellect to realise what's happening to the Xbox, with all the previous exclusives appearing on the PS5 so why buy an Xbox?
Europe’s a different matter (and yes, I still class we Brits as Europeans) but the PS5 to Xbox Series consoles ratio will continue to widen unless M$ can come up with some way of Xbox being relevant again.
PS4 is still in use by millions of users (don't know if you can even buy one any more but sales fell once the Pro was canned?) but some people can't be bothered to upgrade. Even the most anticipated game of recent weeks, Atomfall, is cross-gen.
@Mikey856 PS3 already picked up in the same timeframe...games like infamous uncharted 2 killzone littlebigplanet MGS4 were out and God of war 3 was about to release.
PS3 gave you more as an actual console than a PS5 because of the blu ray player and PSN being free also
@Shad361 PS3 remains the only PS console capable of playing CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays so it was almost an entertainment centre in itself.
@Shad361 bro it was about 2-3 years before we started getting new exclusives like uncharted. PS3 was a disaster for a while. Do you not remember Sony even lowering the specs and therefore price just to get people to buy them
@Mikey856 Well PS5 is almost 5 years old so that's moot. Its 5 years of PS3 vs 5 years of PS5 now, the launch doesn't matter at this point.
Also PS3 didn't have the benefit of cross gen games like PS5 got, sony was still releasing actual PS2 exclusives like god of war 2
@Shad361 okay so 5 years of PS3 vs PS5 is even worse then 🤦♂️ . What you on kid lol
46million PS3s VS 71 million PS5s
Also PS3 had free PSN 😂😂😂
@sanderson72 it’s also the only ps console that can play 3 generations of playstation
the ps3 was expensive in the beginning but to say it wasn’t an ambitious and future proof piece of tech is an understatement. hell, the xbox 360 slim can’t even connect to modern wireless routers but the ps3 can. love the ps3
@nomither6 Yes, my fat one died after about 5.5 years of loyal service (I bought one just after Sony's announcement that they were stopping the 60GB units and replacing them with the non-b/c 40GBs)
Still got my 25xx series Slim though (which can only play 2 generations sadly) and I've still got 3 official DualShock 3s which have outlasted 2 Driftsenses...
Sony will have the marketing deal for GTA6 as well and once that releases sales will go through the roof.
@sanderson72 yea they didn’t have long lifespans , my ps3 got the red screen of death and never turned on again, though i blame that on it not being ventilated and i think it overheated. like you, im stuck with a slim now too , but at least we both still have a ps3 around .
& those dualshock 3s are something else! they feel cheap but they’re anything but that; can’t say the same for the drift sense🤣 i’ve been through about 8-9 of them! so much money wasted!
